About the RTP Documentary:

In the summer of 2006, a film crew from RTP, a television station in the Azores, was in Colorado Springs to film a documentary.  The documentary told of how this small Portuguese community comes together every year to celebrate the festival.  It aired on June 26, 2006, in the Azores, Portugal, the east & west coasts, and Canada.  It was so popular that RTP received an extraordinary number of requests to air the program again.  To this day it is still aired occasionally in the Azores.

In 2006 Manuel & Conceicao Rodrigues, 4 of their children, and one granddaughter visited the Azorean Island of San Miguel.  Virtually everywhere Manuel and Conceicao went they were recognized from the documentary that was aired by RTP.  They were treated like celebrities.  While they were there, the current president of the regional government of the Azores, Carlos Cesar, invited the family to the Palacio de Santana.  He told them that he had noticed when he watched the documentary that they didn’t have an Azorean flag for their festival. Therefore, he presented them with an Azorean flag to take back to Colorado Springs for their festival.  This flag is currently used in their precession. When they flew back to the states, they stayed on the East Coast for a few days with Conceicao’s cousins for the Festa do Divino Espirito Santo in Fall River Massachusetts. If you would like to see the documentary please click here.
